Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a condition characterized by the appearance of darker spots on the skin, caused by excessive production of melanin - the pigment that gives skin, hair and eyes their color. It can include various forms, such as age spots, acne hyperpigmentation, melasma, as well as freckles.

There are many factors that can lead to hyperpigmentation. One of the most common is sun exposure. UV rays stimulate melanin production, which can lead to the appearance of dark spots, especially on parts of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, arms and hands.

Another contributing factor to hyperpigmentation can be hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, menopause or when using hormonal contraception. In these cases, hyperpigmentation often takes the form of melasma, characterized by dark spots on the face.

Hyperpigmentation can also result from inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne, eczema or skin trauma. In such cases, excess melanin is often produced in response to the healing process, leading to acne hyperpigmentation or post-traumatic scarring.

Skin aging is another factor that can contribute to hyperpigmentation. With the passage of time, melanin production becomes less uniform, which can lead to the formation of age spots, also known as liver spots.

Hyperpigmentation is a complex problem that can have various causes and symptoms. Regardless of the cause, it is a condition that can be controlled and influenced by proper skin care and protection methods.
